Two different Scholarship opportunities are being offered to local young women for the summer of 2011 by the Zonta Club of Traverse City. Each application is due by April 1, 2011.
“Young Women in Science” is a 2 day course through the Inland Seas Education Association, combining the adventure of sailing with the discovery of Great Lakes Science. The course is designed for high school girls entering the 10th or 11th grades. Students will sail (and spend the night) aboard the schooner Inland Seas and carry out research projects related to the ecology of Lake Michigan. The trip begins and ends in Suttons Bay.
If you are interested in this unique opportunity, being held June 20-21, 2011, please email: katie@zelenocklaw.com for an application, or fax a request to Katie Halbert at 231-929-9525.
For a second year Zonta is sponsoring “The Forensic Science and CSI” class, held at Michigan Tech University during the week of July 17-23, 2011. Girls entering the 8th grade, interested in Science and Technology are encouraged to request an application from melindadowney@charter.net. The Zonta Club of Traverse City sponsors the cost of the course, housing, and a travel allowance.
Students are taught how forensic scientists solve crimes through DNA analysis, blood typing, hair and fiber analysis, and facial reconstruction. They will examine bones and tooth impressions and work as a team to investigate and solve a mock crime scene. Applicants are required to submit a 300-500 word essay on “Why I am interested in Forensic Science” and a recommendation letter from a teacher or principal with their application.
